THE ENEMY WITHIN - An Intimate Diary (additional information)
Mental abuse is a very common form of abuse in close relationships such as those involving husbands and wives. If methodically applied for several years, it can make the victim believe that she is worth less than she really is, it can turn her into an alcoholic, it can force her into other forms of self destructive behavior, it can literally drive her crazy. Unlike its physical equivalent, mental abuse, unfortunately, is difficult to impossible to control if:
- The perpetrator projects an image of integrity - sometimes even kindness and generosity - among the couple's common friends and colleagues. Many times he does and he easily convinces the world that his wife was unbalanced from the start and that he is the actual victim.
- The victim is unaware that she can only handle abusive relationships and that her conduct and general demeanor may invite the ill treatment.
In this book, Sylvia, the main character as well as narrator, copes with the mental abuse by writing, which not only keeps her busy twelve hours a day and out of his tormentor’s way, it helps her see things in the proper perspective. As her anger gradually increases along with the realization that she does not deserve the poor treatment, she finally explodes. The readers may be surprised by the results.
A must for every woman who finds herself involved in a mentally abusive relationship and who does not find the necessary support or understanding from her immediate society.
