Those of us who lead unsatisfactory lives, often blame it on destiny without realizing that - to a certain extent - they created those lives for themselves. They remain unhappy. But those whose lives are unbearably unhappy, many times will succeed in escaping their “destiny“: extreme pain MAY lead to the final liberation. Out of the darkness typical of the deep recesses of hell, often comes the resplendent light of heaven.
Renata Anastasi, the main character of this book, is one of the unfortunate (or perhaps fortunate) few whose unhappiness becomes so extreme - during the Christmas season of 2002 - that she recognizes, early in the story, her own dark hell, against everybody else’s light and shimmering world of Christmas.
It is just because of such a marked diversity, that she gradually realizes that - although real during her early life - hell now only exists in her own mind. It is a pattern of life to which she has adjusted in order to survive, while unaware that she has been living in a fictional world ever since - old enough to be on her own - she left home many years before.
With such a realization, she cuts off her ties with the past. She leaves the family that abused her and expected the impossible from her behind. She forgets about her unhappy childhood and youth. She starts to live in the present. She is finally free and no longer unhappy.
